Competition Team
& Elite Team
Two stages of the same track. Competition Team is where students learn to compete. Elite Team is what a few of them earn.
WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS
Competition Team is open to students who want to compete — it is not reserved for the students who are already winning. Most athletes join it before they are ready to win anything, and that is the correct time to join.
Training is sparring and patterns work aimed at real tournaments: timing, distance, ring craft, reading an opponent, and the specific discipline of performing a pattern under a judge’s eye. Athletes learn the rules well enough that the rules stop costing them points.
Students compete locally first. Provincial and national events come later, once an athlete has enough ring time to get something out of them.
What parents should expect
HOW ELITE TEAM IS EARNED
There is no application form and no fee. Coaches select from the Competition Team, and the criteria are deliberately not about talent.
Consistency first
Turning up week after week, including the weeks it is inconvenient. This is the one coaches weigh most heavily, and the one families most often underestimate.
Standard in training
How a student drills when nobody is scoring it. Elite Team athletes hold their technique when they are tired, not only when they are fresh.
How they treat the room
Elite Team members set the tone for younger students. A strong competitor who makes the room worse does not get selected.
Handling a loss
Everyone on this team loses matches. What coaches watch is what a student does in the twenty minutes afterwards.
A place on the Elite Team cannot be bought. We say this plainly because families ask. There is no upgrade, no premium tier, and no amount of tuition that moves a student across. That is the only reason the students who get there value it.
Competition is one of three branches out of regular kids and teens classes, alongside Masters Club and Leadership Club — and students move between them.
